In 1983 the marketing genius of George Lucas and Lucasfilms continued to put Star Wars on almost anything imaginable. Burger King was an eager partner. The two teamed up and released four limited edition dinner glasses depicting different scenes from the movie. Every week, beginning the last week of May, we went to Burger King, bought a Coke and paid a few cents more to get the glass for that week. It was oddly exciting, since my mother knew we would break them and put them high — on the top shelf of the cupboard type high — for safe-keeping. I still loved getting them, even though they would disappear, out of reach for years. I have the feeling this was a common practice, because there seems to be thousands of these things still around over thirty years later.
I don’t remember the exact release order of the glasses, but I had them all.
- Luke Skywalker facing down Darth Vader & The Emperor on the Death Star
- C3PO and R2D2 with the Ewoks on Endor
- Han Solo with Luke Skywalker on Tatooine
- Princess Leia and Jabba the Hut in Jabba’s palace
I have to say that I am pretty amazed that I still have three of these glasses with me (somewhere in storage). Somewhere, sometime over the years, the Princess Leia/Jabba the Hut glass was either lost or broken.
