“Wild Frontiers: Nine Stories of the West” — The Millhaven Press anthology that wasn’t…

Abstruse Press has a great western anthology released today in Paperback and in E-Book (for Kindle) on Amazon.

I am generously given editing credit for the work, but Dave Higgins did the lion’s share of the work.  Basically, the anthology started out as a Millhaven Press Project under the title of “Cloud of Dust…Cry of Death” some time ago.  That title was reference to a Giuliano Carnimeo directed spaghetti western from 1970 called Una Nuvola di Polvere…Un Grido di Morte…Arriva Sartana (Light the Fuse…Sartana is Coming).

The stories and art were all submitted through Millhaven Press, but circumstances changed, which they tend to do…making it impossible for me to finish the project in the timeframe I was shooting for.  Enter Dave Higgins and Abstruse Press.  Dave was one of the original contributors and had experience taking over projects already in development…so it seemed natural he take over the final stages.  Upon hearing of the possible project cancellation, he quickly volunteered his services.  The rest is history…

If you are a fan of Millhaven Press style stories, then this anthology is for you!  Dave did a great job and put out a great looking anthology with some truly original takes on common western themes.

This is from the Amazon description:

“The Frontier: the line between civilization and the unknown where pioneers rely on a strong will and a dead eye not big city laws.

A land where the sweat you shed makes a place yours, whatever lines the government draws on a map; where everyone knows putting on a badge doesn’t make a sheriff better than everyone else; where the divide between legend and reality isn’t always where it seems. From aging settlers who miss the days when the town only had one street to decent folk who become gunslingers, from lawmen who find the solidity of the railroad is no protection from the devil to practical men who discover some monsters are more than heathen superstition, these nine tales will show you the West that was, that might have been, and might be again.

Each story in this anthology takes you along a different trail, but they share the grit and adventure that built the frontier.

“Hangman’s Knot” by Kevin M. Folliard

“Mystery Train” by Misha Burnett

“Llano Estacado” by Jackson Kuhl

“Dusk Woman” by J. Conrad Matthews

“Josephine’s Revenge” by Damito Huffman

“Such is the Nature of the Change” by Stephen M. Coghlan

“Absolution” by Patrick Winters

“Through Dry Places” by Dave Higgins

“The Amarillo Job” by Jeffrey L. Blehar”

Amongst the list of contributors, you can see some Millhaven regulars, including Dave himself.  So, order the book and hit the trail with some great reading!

  1. You’d already selected the stories when I took over, so I consider you responsible for the bit that will most interest readers.

Anyone who wants to claim my typesetting is their favourite aspect of the anthology is of course welcome to ; )
